Program now available: 2024 Colloquium
The full program for the Sydney Clinical Ethics Colloquium 2024 has now been released.
This inaugural two-day event (30 Nov-1 Dec 2024) will bring together leaders in the field across Australasia and beyond, and connect them with clinicians, health service managers, clinical ethics committee members and chairs, policymakers, lawyers, academics, and others with an interest in the work of clinical ethics in the health care system.
“Not only will it provide opportunities to discuss core issues of relevance to clinical ethics and clinical ethics services in the current health care context, we hope it will also create a space for different stakeholders to connect, identify opportunities for collaboration, and ultimately provide a foundational opportunity to foster the development of a clinical ethics community of practice,” Colloquium convening group chairperson and CESA president, Dr Linda Sheahan, writes in an introduction to the event .
Core topics covered include philosophy & ethics in health care; clinical ethics reasoning and capacity building; health law, with a focus on privacy, confidentiality, consent & capacity; the work of organisational ethics, including examination of responses to the COVID19 pandemic; conflicts of interest; paediatric ethics; and issues around death & dying, including futility and voluntary assisted dying.
“We aim to ensure the program is as interactive and deliberative as possible and, with such a broad range of clinical ethics experts in one room, we hope attendees will make the most of this opportunity to engage fully in the facilitated discussions and go deeper into those difficult questions.”
“We are hoping, pending the success of this year’s event, to run a bi-annual Sydney Clinical Ethics Intensive, with the first follow up event pencilled in for March 2026 – so watch this space."
